NEEDED: DIETITIAN
OBJECTIVE: USCG Training Center Cape May is establishing a Future Sentinel Preparatory Course (FSPC) designed to assist potential civilian volunteers in overcoming challenges that may be preventing them from pursuing a path in the Coast Guard Service with the Dietitian supporting the portion of the program focusing on assisting those who struggle to meet body composition standards. The Registered Dietitian will serve as the authority, consultant, and practitioner for comprehensive dietitian programs to include medical Nutrition Therapy, Performance Nutrition and Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration, and Performance Improvement, as well as other skillsets within the Dietitian’s scope of practice. This will help to foster healthy lifestyle changes for those Future Sentinels who strive to meet body composition constraints.
LOCATION: 1 Munro Ave, Cape May, NJ, 08204
SCHEDULE:
- 8-hour workday with a 30-minute lunchtime break period.
- Total of up to 40 hours per week Monday thru Saturday.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have and maintain a current, active, valid, and unrestricted license to practice in the State of
- New Jersey. Former adverse actions against a license shall be considered grounds by the vendor for determining the candidate to be unacceptable for the position.
- Must maintain Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association or other agency recognized by the State of New Jersey, the CG, and First Aid certifications.
- Shall have an entry-level Bachelors or Master’s degree in Dietetics and Nutrition from an educational institute accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) or completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) accredited by the ACEND or completion of a post- Baccalaureate degree Dietetic Internship Program of supervised practice (for a minimum of 1200 hours) accredited by ACEND and pass a comprehensive state licensing exam.
- Background in sports nutrition and/or weight management is desired.
- Shall comply with the State of New Jersey health, immunization, and other medical screening requirements for healthcare providers.
- Must be approved to practice in the state of New Jersey.
- Must possess and demonstrate critical thinking skills to modify and adapt established methods of disciplines.
- Must recognize the needs of Future Sentinels which are unique to their training cycle, as compared with, sports organizations, universities, academies, physical therapy clinics, or wellness centers.
- Be able to adapt training or treatments based on the military training and established qualification standard requirements.
- Obtaining working knowledge of CG directives and policies related to CG physical readiness, and entry level training.
- Knowledge must be of sufficient depth and breadth to enable the Vendor to address immediate needs plus
- long-term programs and projects.
- Must be able to work independently, be capable of identifying problems/issues, and be able to design and develop appropriate treatment plans based on understanding of job requirements, broad guidance, and own initiative to achieve a comprehensive solution without regular direct supervision. This ability must be demonstrated through a minimum of one year of appropriate work experience.
- Must recognize and adapt to the needs of the adult learner in a training or classroom environment.
- Must demonstrate ability to create, develop, and enhance instructional presentations in a training session or classroom for both individual and group (small or large) instruction and be able to adapt these to a Future Sentinels and staff populations.
JOB DUTIES:
- Dietitian will play a vital role in preparing recruits for Coast Guard service by educating and guiding Sentinels to ensure safe progression towards their health goals.
- Perform Registered Dietitian (RD) service consultations, practitioner, and dietitian program expert within their scope of practice to assist Future Sentinel obtain weight standards.
1. Medical Nutrition Therapy:
- Serve as part of an interdisciplinary team composed of fitness instructors, Coast Guard (CG) Corpsman.
- Shall determine optimal medical nutrition therapy utilizing a four-step nutrition care process:
- (1) nutrition assessment; (2) nutrition diagnosis; (3) nutrition intervention; and (4)
- nutrition monitoring and evaluation.
- Use Evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines assist them and the Future Sentinel in making decisions about nutrition care and the treatment plan.
2. Health Assessments:
- Assess Future Sentinel health and nutrition history to include chief complaint, history of present concern, past medical and surgical history, laboratory values, medication and supplement use, activity level, typical eating patterns, cultural background, psychosocial issues that impact on nutritional status, and
- other conditions, (i.e., food preferences and meal preparation).
- Perform anthropometric
- measurements as needed to assess nutritional status such as abdominal circumference and body fat analysis.
- Perform nutrient analysis of dietary intake and estimates nutrition requirements specific for the clinical condition. Incorporates various patient-centered counseling and education techniques such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy to enhance understanding and compliance of diet modifications.
- Instruct Future Sentinels on use of electronic or print food and activity diaries to improve compliance and monitoring of diet modification.
3. Future Sentinel Preparatory Course (FSPC) Progress Monitoring:
- Manages Future Sentinel care through evidence-based treatment plans to include follow-up and routine monitoring of compliance through metric indicators such as abdominal circumference, lipid abnormalities, and iron levels.
4. Performance Nutrition and Sentinel Fueling:
- Develop basic nutrition plans including individualized menu plans for classes of up to 30 students over a 90-day period.
- Calculate caloric intake and protein/carbohydrate/fat balancing to meet the physical demands of the program while enabling safe weight loss.
5. CG Weight Control Program:
- Provide weight reduction counseling to Future Sentinels.
- Provides memoranda documenting nutrition counseling when appropriate.
6. Weight Management:
- Shall conduct weight reduction counseling based on the Future Sentinels individual nutrition care plan.
- Weight reduction counseling can be conducted individually, as a group, or a combination of individual and group
- sessions.
- Monitors weight reduction program effectiveness by conducting anthropometric measurements such as weight, abdominal circumference, iron levels, LDL, and body fat. Instructs Future Sentinels on the use of electronic or paper food and fitness diaries to increase diet compliance, weight loss, and behavior change.
7. Tactical Athleticism:
- Shall provide nutrition education programs to maximize human performance optimization and eventual combat performance.
- Attends leadership meetings as special advisor, providing a brief as directed by the Agency Technical Representative.
- Provide educational programs such as nutritional refueling, supplements, effective use of caffeine for performance, and sleep hygiene and foods naturally designed to help prevent injury.
8. Nutritional Plan Monitoring:
- Shall conduct spot checks of student plates during mealtimes to provide timely feedback on student feeding decisions.
- Review food and fitness diaries to monitor trends and compliance with prescribed nutritional plans.
9. Sentinel Fueling Initiatives:
- Shall provide support to the CG TRACEN Cape May Food Service Officer in marketing CG nutrition.
10. Individualized Wellness Plans:
- Develop individualized wellness plans based on comprehensive risk-factors for weight, use, exercise rates, nutritional status, and blood pressure.
- Conduct counseling or referrals appropriate to the individual’s identified needs to include one or more of the following: Nutritional counseling, physical activity plan, alcohol and smoking cessation counseling and services, stress management and health approved dietary supplements.
11. Future Sentinel Care Huddle:
- Shall provide patient-centered nutrition care through collaborating with interdisciplinary team.
- Promotes and participates in team-based group therapy for treatment of conditions such as obesity and eating disorders.
- Personally, delivers nutrition education to Future Sentinels in the form of classroom lecture, small group discussions, and one-on-one counseling.
12. Performance Improvement Program:
- Shall provide input to the performance improvement program.
- Identifies areas for improvement in Future Sentinel care, establishes objectives for improvement and reports on the progress of attaining objectives.
- Completes and reports ongoing performance improvement indicators.
- Maintains and compiles data for potential future educational projects, studies, and research.
13. Records and Documentation:
- Shall document patient records all assessments, nutrition therapy, treatments, and follow-up care rendered through the computerized programs.
- Treatment and follow-up records on each individual diagnosis, and follow-up for use in research and analysis to improve treatment and program improvement.
