NEEDED: Dental Assistant
LOCATION: 501 Gary Hill Rd, PO Box 723, Edgefield, SC, 29824
SCHEDULE: 35 hours per week – 7 hours per day, Monday through Friday (except Federal Holidays), normally between the hours of 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- US Citizen
- Have a certification from an accredited Dental Assistant School or minimum of (1) year experience in a dental setting as a Dental Assistant.
- Training must include Dental Radiology and Radiology Safety and must provide a license.
- Shall be certified in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
- Should provide 3 letters of reference
DUTIES:
- Obtains diagnostic quality periapical, occlusal, lateral, jaw, TMJ, and panoramic radiographs.
- Correctly positions inmate and film, determines level of radiation intensity to minimize radiation exposure of inmates and processes and saves digital radiographs to inmates’ record.
- Maintains proper infection control procedures.
- Places and finishes dental restorations, including bases and liners.
- Assists Dental Officer in dental specialty sections: restorative, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthetics, and examinations.
- Retrieve inmate’s records and escorts inmates to proper dental specialty section; seats and prepares inmates for attending dental officer.
- Assists dental officer by preparing dental instruments, essential materials, and medications.
- Passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates oral cavity, and operates aspirator.
- Observes inmates’ responses and assists inmate for dismissal from dental clinic.
- Makes necessary entries on dental treatment records (both electronic (BEMR) and paper records.)
- Prepares dental treatment room for the next inmate.
- Assists in the treatment of emergency cases with the dental officer.
- Provide dental health education.
- Assists with dental screening examination.
- Prepares inmate for periodontal surgery, performs dental and periodontal charting.
- Prepares, places, and removes packs.
- Places temporary fillings.
- Places and removes rubber dams.
- Maintains dental equipment, cleans, and sterilizes instruments.
- Performs daily inspections of equipment and reports any defective equipment to the dental officer.
- Selects and applies medication in proper portion and anti‐cariogenic agents to surface of teeth, applies medication prescribed by a dental officer to gingiva to promote healing.
- Fabricates and repairs dental prosthesis and appliances under supervision of dental officer.
- Uses Acrylic resin and porcelain as basic materials.
- Takes radiographs of patients using standard and digital dental radiographic, panelipse, cephalometric and transcranial equipment.
- Makes primary impressions and pours cast.
- Must wear proper PPE.
- Must follow BOP Policy and Procedures related to proper sterilization of equipment and attend Centra Education as directed by the Chief Dentist.
- Will only be onsite at FCI Edgefield when a dentist is present or if they have received permission from the Health Services Administrator or his designee.
- Will wear appropriate attire, to include scrubs that are dark blue, burgundy, or grey.
- Must wear scrub top (with no writing, patterns, or designs) and bottoms or polo shirt (with no writing, patterns, or designs) with scrub bottoms. No denim, no pastel colors, no red, no orange, no greens, no khaki and no black.
