Job description:
- Sterile Processing Technicians play an essential role in the healthcare system by ensuring that surgical instruments and medical equipment are meticulously cleaned, sterilized, and ready for use.
- Their responsibilities include cleaning and decontaminating instruments and equipment to remove biological material, blood, and other contaminants, adhering to guidelines and policies established by AAMI, AORN, FDA, and OSHA, and wearing appropriate PPE to prevent cross-contamination.
- They follow manufacturer instructions for use (MIFU) while inspecting instruments for damage, wear, or malfunction.
- Technicians operate sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, V-Pro, machine washers, and ultrasonics as per MIFU and established protocols, monitoring and recording sterilization cycles to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- They reassemble reusable medical instruments according to AAMI, AORN, FDA, and OSHA guidelines and MIFU, checking each instrument for staining, pitting, cracking, and rust.
- Instruments must be properly packaged to maintain sterility until needed, and technicians prepare and label packages accurately, ensuring all contents are documented.
- Maintaining accurate records of cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance activities is critical to ensure compliance with AAMI, AORN, FDA, and facility protocols.
- Additionally, they may be involved in training new staff members on sterile processing procedures and best practices to ensure a high standard of care.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a recognized Sterile Processing Technician training program.
- Certification (CRCST, CBSPD).
