Health Aide & Technician Mental Health Services

Duration: One year

Pay Rate: $37.50 per hour

Locations:  VA North Texas Healthcare System Sam Rayburn Memorial VAMC, 1201 E 9th Street, Bonham, TX 75418-4059

Schedule:

VA Business Hours: Health Aide(s) must work 40 hours per week to include a variation of shifts from Sunday through Thursday and Tuesday through Saturday. The Sunday through Thursday shift hours would be from 11:30 pm–8:00 am. The Tuesday through Saturday shifts would be from 7:30am–4:00 pm and 3:30pm–12:00 am. Shifts and locations can be subject to change, but the current need is as follows:

All shifts will include a 30-minute meal break, and two 15-minute breaks based on workload and staffing. The Government will not pay for the 30-minute meal break.

Description:

Each resume must include the following:

  • Proof of BLS and/or ACLS certification
  • High School Diploma and two years of post-secondary study (minimum 12 semester hours) in health sciences, nursing, behavioral science, social science, guidance, counseling, teaching, biological sciences, or a related field.
  • Documented experience providing residential rehabilitation patient care.
  • Minimum one (1) year of direct patient care performing therapeutic and supportive duties, assisting physicians and rehabilitation personnel.
  • Three (3) professional references (name, address, role/capacity, and phone number), including current or most recent supervisor.

Relevant Health Tech/Aide job duties, including:

  • Providing day-to-day care and support in a 24/7 Domiciliary setting.
  • Listening to patient concerns, observing behaviors, conducting rounding, and reporting condition/behavior changes to clinical staff.
  • Leading therapeutic and recreational activities.
  • Assisting with patient intake and discharge.
  • Monitoring patient behavior and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Escorting patients and ensuring structure, supervision, and therapeutic engagement.
  • Performing work in accordance with VA policies and medical staff regulations.
  • The Health Aides will be responsible for delivering essential day-to-day care and support services within the Domiciliary on a 24/7 basis to ensure continuous, around-the-clock supervision.

Qualifications: 

Certification: Health Aide(s) must provide BLS and/or ACLS Certification.

Education: All Health Aide(s) must have a High School Diploma. Two years of study in an accredited college or university, junior college, or similar institution, which included or was supplemented by at least 12 semester hours in such courses as health sciences, nursing, behavioral science, social science, guidance, counseling, teaching, biological sciences or related fields. 

Resume/Curriculum Vitae: Must provide a current resume/curriculum vitae for qualified Health Aide(s). Resumes should document current and previous experience in providing residential rehabilitation patient care. Health Aides(s) must have a minimum of one (1) year experience in direct patient care performing therapeutic and supportive tasks in assisting Physicians and other personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program setting. The curriculum vitae must include three (3) references (name, address, capacity, telephone) including the current or last supervisor.

Functions of the Health Aide:

Introduction: In the area of assignment within the North Texas Healthcare Systems the Health Aide provides direct and indirect patient care. The position requires the ability to follow directions, determine priorities as they relate to patient care needs, within the scope of a Health Aide, organization skills and observational skills.

Organizational Relationship: The Health Aide(s) is subject to the professional direction of the VA Rehabilitation Technician Supervisor or designee. 

Functions: The services of Health Aide must be provided in accordance with the policies of the VA Healthcare System where assigned. The Health Aide provides the following services:

  • Perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive Health Aide tasks in assisting physicians and other professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program for alcohol and/or drug-dependent patients.
  • Orienting patients to the treatment program.
  • Observing patients for symptoms, behaviors, actions, reactions, indications, and contraindications to treatment.
  • Assisting in individual or group therapy sessions or in behavior therapy sessions.
  • Providing supportive assistance to patients placed on maintenance therapy.
  • Assisting with patient intake and discharge processes.
  • Closely monitoring patients' behavior and whereabouts to maintain a safe environment.
  • Escort patients throughout the facility and ensuring structure, supervision, and therapeutic engagement throughout the recovery process
  • Promote a harmonious and cooperative working environment in their interaction with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Follow all North Texas Health Care System guidelines and VA policies.
  • Accessions orders by use of computer system.
  • Capable of reading Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and adhering them to the current Rehabilitation Treatment Program.
  • Clearly communicate the daily status and problems about the laboratory output to team members and senior management of the service.
