Registered Nurse II (1099)

Pay rate: $65.00 per hour (1099) or $62.50 (W2)

Duration: 1 year contract.

VA Business Hours: 24/7, including evenings, nights, weekends and Federal Holidays.

Work Schedule: Staff will be offered to work either straight eight (8) hour shifts or twelve (12) hour shifts with one (1) eight (8) hour tour every two weeks. The following schedule options applies (note: if assigned to Bath CLC5 unit there is a special schedule set):

8-hour shifts:

Scheduling notes:

  • Nurses will have a 1⁄2 hour unpaid break each shift.
  • There may be occasional overtime, pre-approved, at the discretion of the Nurse Manager and nursing leadership.
  • The VA will provide shift confirmations to the contractor and contract staff 14 days in advance.
  • Staff may be scheduled to work on Federal Holidays. Contract staff only receive Holiday pay on the actual Federal Holiday itself. "In lieu of Holidays” are Regular Time, not Holiday Pay.
  • Staff will receive Holiday Pay for the entire shift worked.
  • Nurses will work 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM on a weekday during their initial Orientation. Typically, initial Orientation lasts 2 days. Upon completion of initial Orientation, contractor will continue to be oriented on the assigned unit according to their scheduled shifts.

Description:

  • The Long-Term Care RN provides skilled nursing care to long term care patients with chronic illness, or disability and are not capable of caring for themselves for an extended period of time.
  • The RN ensures patient centered, individualized care that promotes independence maximizes patient's quality of life and ensures coordination of services to meet the patient's needs over a period of time.
  • Experienced and qualified Long-Term Care Registered Nurses are required to provide additional staffing for the Inpatient Long Term Care Unit at the Finger Lakes VAMC.

Supervisory Control: Registered Nurse is accountable to the Nurse Manager within the Community Living Center unit (CLC).

Qualifications:

  • All Registered Nurses shall have at least two years recent experience in long term care. VA experience is preferred.
  • Educational Requirements: Minimum of associate's degree in nursing (AND) or bachelor's degree in nursing or a master's degree in nursing. Nurses are preferred to have experience in long term care and accreditation through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • License: Shall be currently certified or licensed, as appropriate, in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia. All licenses held by the personnel shall be fully valid and without restriction.
  • A current CPR/BLS certificate by the American Heart Association is required prior to starting work at FLHCS.
  • Experience in Geriatrics and Extended Care and rehabilitation is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes the nursing process in managing, developing, implementing, and evaluating each resident's individual plan of care with the interdisciplinary team to attain specific clinical outcomes.
  • Provides a full range of nursing care to residents with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.
  • Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and the evaluation of caregiver issues.
  • Assesses learning needs of veterans, caregivers, and staff.
  • Works collaboratively with all levels of health care professional and support staff to facilitate positive resident care outcomes.
  • Effectively communicates with veterans, caregivers, visitors, and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Guides and direct resident care delivery of support staff.
  • Administration & monitoring of medications.
  • Compliance with various isolation precautions and infection control guidelines.
  • Skills in time management, priority setting, assessment and urgent intervention are essential for this unit
  • Advanced vascular access care (PICC/Ports) and maintenance.
  • Trach care.
  • Maintains prevention & management of disruptive behavior skills, can be trained upon hire.
  • Patient and caregiver education and support.
  • Participation in High Reliability Organization (HRO) & professional governance initiatives.
  • Promotes evidence-based best practices and nurse sensitive indicators (including but not limited to falls prevention, infection prevention, medication error prevention, safe patient handling, and skin safety.)
