Pay rate: $220.00/1099

Duration: 1 year contract.

Location: VAMC Robley Rex Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) (also known as the Louisville VAMC) located at 800 Zorn Avenue, Louisville, KY 40206.

Schedule: VA Business Hours/Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm.

Job Description:

  • Pathologists provided shall be Board eligible/certified by the American Board of Pathology; or for dermatopathology certification may come from the American Board of Dermatology and must be Board eligible/certified in Dermatopathology American Board of Dermatopathology or International Diploma in Dermatopathology.
  • If an International Diploma in Dermatopathology is provided, a formal review of credential/performance by VHACO P&LMS and declaration of equivalence will be required.
  • Shall cover the range of Anatomical and Clinical Pathology services.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the government's requirements, including the ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.
  • Shall provide documents upon request of the CO/COR to verify current and ongoing competency, skills, certification and/or licensure related to the provision of care, treatment and/or services performed.
  • Shall have knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform assignments of pathology patient/critically ill patient population.
  • Pathologists shall demonstrate knowledge of growth and development, and pathophysiology of disease processes.

Scope of Care

  • Shall be responsible for providing Anatomic and Clinical pathology services, including, but not limited to:
  • Anatomic & Clinical Pathology Services
  • Shall provide pathology services.
  • Shall be present on time for any scheduled laboratory hours as documented by physical presence in the laboratory at the scheduled start time.
  • Only qualified, licensed, and locally privileged pathologists certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology can provide the written report for all surgical pathology, autopsy, non-GYN cytopathology and abnormal GYN cytopathology examinations. Staff will report to Chief of Service, Director of Clinical Pathology or Director of Anatomic Pathology as appropriate.
  • Shall provide comprehensive anatomic/clinical pathology services. Providing application of accepted criteria in formulating and reporting diagnostic information on various anatomic pathology specimens to include Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, and autopsy pathology. Typical procedures include but are not limited to: Diagnosing presence and stage of diseases using laboratory techniques and patient specimen, perform autopsies to determine causes of deaths.
  • Provide clinical laboratory consultation for all clinical laboratory services to technical personnel and healthcare providers. Consultation should be timely, conveniently available, accurate and clinically useful, descriptive, evaluative and provide complete diagnoses for all anatomic specimens obtained in the VA medical facility and its outreach functions.
  • Ensures that sections within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine follow accrediting and regulatory agency requirements. The incumbent achieves these goals by assisting in establishing, coordinating, and maintaining quality assurance programs. Additionally, the incumbent has advance knowledge to accurately interpret and provide technical guidance on a wide variety of internal and external agency policies and procedures.
  • Perform intradepartmental consultations on difficult cases, controversial cases, and cases that will lead to a major surgical intervention as a way of reducing diagnostic errors. All cases with unexpected diagnoses of clinical significance, and diagnoses of malignancy not previously established (excluding skin squamous and basal cell carcinomas), must be reviewed by a second pathologist prior to issuance of the final report and concurrence by the second pathologist must be documented on the final report.
  • Evaluate the extent of disease of frozen surgical specimen to assist in the treatment of surgical patients.
  • Perform postmortem examinations to determine the cause of death when cause is unclear.
  • Evaluate tissue samples obtained elsewhere (either at another VA facility or non-VA facility), when patients are to receive treatment at a VA facility. Ensure that the patient's clinical provider obtains and submits the outside tissue slides to the VA pathologists at the facility where the patient will receive treatment so that the diagnosis can be confirmed. Any treatment or procedure on the patient should not be performed until confirmation of the diagnosis has been obtained.
  • Provides overall management of post-mortem examination services that include: Arrangements for securing post-mortem examination authorizations. NOTE: It is VHA policy that permission to perform a post-mortem examination must be requested in every instance when a patient dies while an inpatient at a VA facility or under the immediate care of a VA facility.
  • Provision of sufficient competent staff for the examinations and for timely completion of post-mortem examination reports.
  • Maintenance of suitable facilities and appropriate coordination with funeral directors and local authorities.
  • Ensuring that post-mortem examination findings become a continuing component of the internal monitoring of medical practice of the VA medical facility.
  • Participation in Quality Assurance measures for laboratory sections as required by accreditation standards.
  • Create surgical reports that are coded for CPT, VAMC tissue committee, and ICD-10 components. Interpretations will occur as per routine surgical pathology practice.
  • Perform as an authority and subject matter expert to laboratory staff and medical staff when questions arise regarding problems with sample acquisition, interpretation of test results, or rationale for ordering or cancelling tests.
