Shift: 80 Hrs Per Pay Period, 8Hr Day Shift Monday-Friday Includes Weekends/Holidays On-call
Statement of Duties: This position is located in the Operating Room, nursing branch of the Gallup Indian Medical Center.
All types of elective and emergency surgeries are performed, including general surgery, orthopedics, vascular, OB/GYN,
urology, ENT, Oral Surgery, Dental and Ophthalmology.
There are over 2400 cases performed each year. Trauma is a significant part of the emergent cases performed. The
operating rooms are staffed by utilizing standby call services after hours, holidays, and on weekends.
The PACU registered nurse provides intensive nursing care and post anesthesia care to patients who have undergone a
broad range of surgical procedures.
• All staff members rotate between the pre-op counseling, prep-surgery room, recovery room and local procedures
room.
• Performs critical professional nursing duties for patients whose condition warrants specialized care.
• In the recovery phase, observation and assessment post anesthesia is completed
o Physical assessment and examination
o Interviewing patient and family members
o Reviewing patient health history
• Collaborates with surgeon and anesthesia team on patient status and plan of care.
• Records and maintains all data relevant to post anesthesia care.
o Observes patient closely for adverse signs and symptoms
o Provides intervention emergently utilizing ACLS or PALS training
• Manages each patient through all phases of recovery, providing psychological and emotional support.
• Is alert for signs and symptoms of shock or other complications that may occur in post-op recovery.
• Assists the anesthesia or surgeon with resuscitation and assessment, monitors the condition of the patient while in
recovery.
• Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the anesthesiologist and/or anesthetist or surgeon such as
medications, treatment, IV fluids, blood products, oxygen, and others.
• Records observation, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures, hemodynamic monitoring data, or any other
data relevant to the patient condition in the recovery room.
• Utilizes AORN standards of care to implement, evaluate and revise an appropriate problem oriented nursing plan
of care for the operative patient.
