BUS OPERATOR

NEEDED: Bus Operator

LOCATION: COLUMBUS CIVIC CENTER 400 4th St, Columbus, GA 31901

HOURS: As Needed/ Event Driven, 7 days a week, Monday-Sunday, 12:00 AM – 12:00 PM

DRESS CODE: Black or brown shoes and black pants

REQUIREMENTS:

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completes pre-trip inspection of bus which includes inspecting wheelchair lift, lights, wind shield wipers and mirrors, doors, fare box, luminator, safety equipment, radio and tires; performs slack brake test and checks for major oil leaks; completes daily inspection card.
  • Maintains on and off-duty discipline in respect to the Driving Under the Influence (DUI) laws; undergoes random drug/alcohol testing as selected; attends courses for defensive driving as necessary.
  • Operates assigned bus to provide dependable transportation service to the public; arrives at assigned stops in compliance with fifty-second tolerance of route schedule.
  • Operates radio in bus to receive and transmit messages; reports accidents/incidents and emergency situations while en route; assists 911 by reporting inoperative traffic lights and other roadway hazards.
  • Notifies dispatcher and obtains necessary repairs and maintenance work for bus at each tum-around point; disconnects engine battery in case of fire en route; secures bus in a safely parked on or off-road in case of an accident or engine malfunction and directs traffic around bus as necessary.
  • Accommodates passengers with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by operating wheelchair lift and securing passengers with Q-Straint Straps, notifying dispatcher of
  • wheelchair passengers and their intended route, announcing all major intersections while en route,
  • Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of streets on assigned route.
  • Uniform traffic control devices.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in work.
  • Routine and emergency departmental procedures and requirements for record keeping.
  • Skill in Safe operation of passenger transportation bus.
  • Operation of two-way radio.

Educational and Training Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; six months to one year of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Class B Commercial License (Passenger Endorsement I preference) and Motor Vehicle Report; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, works near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat, extreme cold and vibration.
  • Working conditions are typically moderately loud.
